Questions about your adoption.
Clear information about your adoption, sightings, gifting and naming.
Does adopting a shark mean I own it?
No. The shark remains a wild animal. Your adoption supports Shark Search research and gives you access to a private adoption portal created around the shark you choose.
Can more than one person adopt the same shark?
Yes. For standard adoptions, an individual shark may be adopted by more than one supporter. Naming is different. Once an approved name is formally assigned, that shark becomes exclusive to the person who named it and is no longer available for adoption by other supporters.
What happens if my shark is seen again?
If a new verified sighting is added to your shark's research record, it can be viewed through your private adoption portal. Sightings are based on available research records and are not live or real-time tracking.
Can I give an adoption as a gift?
Yes. You can choose a shark for someone else, personalise the adoption in their name and include a personal message. They receive their own private adoption portal and personalised adoption certificate.
How does naming a shark work?
Some sharks are made available for naming. Where naming is available, you can propose a name for that individual. Every proposed name is reviewed by Shark Search before it is formally assigned. Once named, that shark becomes exclusive to the person who named it and is no longer available for adoption by other supporters.
How will I receive my adoption?
Your adoption is delivered digitally and includes access to your private adoption portal, personalised certificate, species information and the recorded sightings available for your shark.
